Big Sur is one of the most famous drives in the world, and from Seaside you can be on the coast road within half an hour. Here is a relaxed day plan.

Before you go

  • Check Caltrans QuickMap (https://quickmap.dot.ca.gov/) for Highway 1 conditions. Closures from landslides or roadwork happen.
  • Fill up with gas and download offline maps. Cell service fades quickly south of Carmel.
  • Pack water, snacks, and layers.

Morning: the Carmel Mission

Start at the Carmel Mission, about 13 minutes from the hotel. The basilica and gardens are calm in the morning, and Father Junipero Serra is buried here.

Late morning: Point Lobos

Just south of Carmel, Point Lobos State Natural Reserve has short trails past coves where sea otters and harbor seals rest. Parking inside is limited, so arrive early.

Midday: Bixby Creek Bridge

About 30 minutes from Seaside, the bridge is Big Sur's classic photo stop. Use the marked pullouts and never stop on the bridge itself.

Afternoon: into the redwoods

Continue south to Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park for a walk among the redwoods before turning back. The drive north in late afternoon light is beautiful.

Tips

  • Avoid Sunday, April 25, 2027. Highway 1 closes for the Big Sur International Marathon that morning.
  • Drive slowly and let faster cars pass at the pullouts.

Staying at Sand Dollar Inn

After a long day on the road, unwind at Sand Dollar Inn's outdoor pool in Seaside. Rooms have microwaves and refrigerators, and lobby coffee and tea are ready for an early start. Book direct at sanddollarinnseaside.com.
